David A. Moffat, 82, of Freeland, died Monday, Sept. 1, 2008, in the company of family, after a prolonged battle with Alzheimer’s disease.

A Pacific Northwest native, Mr. Moffat graduated from Ballard High School and the University of Washington.

After a brief stint in the Navy at the end of World War II, he was in the Merchant Marines; he then owned an import company, and later an industrial chemicals distributorship.

He is survived by his beloved wife of over 48 years, Dorothy Moffat; son, Colin Moffat (wife, Sophie) of Park City, Utah; daughter, Merrill Biesada (husband, Pete) of Alexandria, Va.; and five grandchildren, Owen Biesada, Siana Moffat, Russell Biesada, Jade Moffat and Robert Biesada. Also surviving are a nephew, Frank Moffat, of Bothell, a niece, Randy Frost, of Seattle and a cousin, Michael Rothwell, of Kent, and their families.

Mr. Moffat was an active member of both St. John’s Masonic Lodge No. 9 and Scottish Rite, holding numerous leadership positions over his 50-year tenure. He was also a member of Langley Lodge No. 218 at the time of his death. He was a 33rd Degree Mason.

He remained an outdoors enthusiast throughout his life, evidenced by his involvement with the Boy Scouts and the Mountaineers. He summited the six major peaks of Washington (including Mount Rainier and the original Mount St. Helens), along with numerous other Cascade and Olympic peaks.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 13 at Trinity Lutheran Church, 18341 Highway 525, Freeland.
