Eleanor Lewis Grant

Eleanor Lewis Grant died July 8, 2003, in Everett.

She was born Oct. 28, 1913, in Spokane to Thomas Lewis and Daisy Fox.

Her husband, Bob, preceded her in death by six months. The couple was married 62 years. They spent 35 years on a worldwide odyssey that started with Bob’s military service and then shifted to the State Department. Their first six years were in Japan, then another six in Taiwan. They then moved to Indonesia, Ceylon, Guatemala, Bangladesh, and then Washington, D.C. In all of these locations, Mrs. Grant shared diplomatic duties with her husband and had responsibilities for running households in foreign lands.

In 1977, the couple returned to the Pacific Northwest, splitting their time between their home in Lake Forest Park and their Whidbey Island retreat. They joined Seattle Audubon, in which Mrs. Grant served as a board member and the chair of the Membership Committee from 1980 to ’98. She spent 30 hours a week or more updating the records of over 5,000 members. According to her family, she cared about people and was loved by everyone who knew her. She leaves behind many good friends.

An informal memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Aug. 9 at the Grant’s beach on Whidbey Island.

Memorials may be made to the Bob and Eleanor Grant Education Endowment at Seattle Audubon, 8050 35th Ave. NE, Seattle, WA 98115.
