Felicia “Queenie” Braun, born April 16, 1910 in Seattle, passed away in her final home at Maple Ridge in Freeland on May 16, 2009.
Raised in a Catholic orphanage in Seattle, she married Joe Braun (deceased), and moved to Alaska, where she spent half of her life in the bakery business with her husband.
They settled in Skagway, Alaska, where Felicia developed an act as “Queenie, An Aging Dance Hall Girl,” which she performed for tourist audiences for 20 years.
Retired in 1978, she and Joe moved back to Washington, where they lived out their remaining years.
Felicia is survived by her son Jay Braun and his wife, Sara, of Tempe, Arizona; grandchildren Jodie Philp of Langley and Jason Braun of Coupeville; and three great-grandchildren. In addition, the late John Braun, a prominent Langley artist, was her nephew.
Her many friends and family will miss her wonderful sense of humor, incredible resourcefulness, stories of pioneering life in Alaska and her warmth and generosity.
For most of her life Felicia eschewed formal religion of any kind, but ask about her beliefs she would say:
“I belong to the Round Church where the devil can’t get me in a corner.” And as far as anybody can tell, he never did.
Visser Funeral Home is helping the family with arrangements.
