James Hayden Smith, 92, died at home in Langley on March 8, 2004. He was born to Charles and Alma Smith on April 8, 1911, in Springfield, Ore.

He married Myrtle Alligier on July 3, 1937. They lived in Clarkston, Wash. where they had fruit orchards and he was employed by Potlatch Corp. After raising their family, they traveled for several years to Canada and Mexico. They moved to Whidbey Island near Goss Lake in 1979.

A son, John James, preceded him in death.

Mr. Smith is survived by his wife, Myrtle; a daughter and her husband, Mary and Ed Fraser; daughter La Vonne Trimble; a son and his wife, Charles and Inez Smith; eight grandchildren; and15-great-grandchildren.
