John Mergens

After 84 years of loving service to his country, community and loved ones, John “Jack” Thomas Mergens left his earthly home on Thanksgiving Day, 2009.

He served in the Navy as well as numerous missions for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

A former fire commissioner and school teacher, he was also an avid fisherman, sports enthusiast, crossword master and musician.

He loved his association with South Whidbey’s Senior Fun Band.

Well-known for his humor, selflessness, wit and caring, he will be deeply missed by those who he leaves behind; his wife, Paulita D. Mergens; his brothers, Richard Mergens of California and Daniel Mergens of Nebraska; his legacy of children, Micki Mergens of Idaho, Donald Mergens of Lynden, David Mergens of Clinton, Daniel Mergens of Utah, Jennifer Perkins of California, Lance Mergens of Utah and their respective spouses; as well as 27 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

He was the ultimate cowboy, scholar and gentleman. Happy trails, Jack. You are loved.
