Judith B. Porter Campbell

Judith B. Porter Campbell was born Jan. 16, 1934 in Mutiny Bay, and raised on the family farm in Saratoga with her 14 brothers and sisters, where she returned to build her home in the later years of her life. A multi-generational Whidbey Islander, she was very proud of her Snohomish Indian ancestry. Judy passed peacefully at Enso House on Feb. 8, 2006 surrounded by her family.

Judy was so alive and active her whole life, tending her gardens, climbing, painting, weaving and continuously learning while running after six energetic children. She always had time to notice the beauty of the world and instilled a love of beauty and life in her children. She was strong and brave and will be dearly missed. One of Judy’s most cherished achievements was that she graduated summa cum laude from Sonoma State, earning double bachelor’s degrees in anthropology and psychology when she was 44. If she had a mantra, it was “Always keep learning.”

Judy is survived by her six children; Dave (Jill), Delores, Cynthia, Diane (Jack), Don (Kathy) and Terri (Dean); her 10 brothers and sisters, Bob (Nancy), Gloria (Dean), Sylvia, Cathe, Marge (Larry), Gaylord (Heather), Patti, Howard (Sharon) Jeff and Jennifer; and in-laws Jean E., Jean P., JoAnn and Dick. She was preceded in death by her parents Omer Nathaniel and Tena Porter; her brothers, Omer, Ron and Ray; and her sister, Connie. She was a grandmother to 18 children, and a great-grandmother to 12, of whom she was very proud. She also leaves behind many cousins, nieces and nephews who were an important part of her life.

We would like to thank the wonderful people at Enso House for their loving care and for providing a peaceful, safe environment for our mother’s last days, and for us as we walked through this time.

There will be a memorial service at 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 18 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Freeland, followed by a celebration of Judy’s life. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Enso House, 6339 Wahl Road, Freeland.
