Katelyn Mikolasy

Katelyn Marie Thelma Mikolasy was born Oct. 18, 1992, in Kirkland.

She left this life March 6, 2009, in Provo, Utah, at just 16 years old. Kat is survived by her mother Patsy Brereton and stepfather Bruce Brereton of Utah; her father Ted Mikolasy Jr. and stepmother Amy Mikolasy of New Jersey; her grandparents Kay and Jerry Craig of Washington, Vernell and Louise Westover of Washington, and Ted Mikolasy Sr. of Washington; her great-grandmother Thelma McLaughlin of Washington; her half-brother Sam Mikolasy of Washington; her step-brothers Brian Brereton of Arizona, and Doug Brereton of Washington; and her step-sisters Nora Brereton of California, and Eliza Brereton of Utah.

Kat recently lived in three different states and enjoyed each one for different reasons. On Whidbey Island, she attended Langley Middle School surrounded by forest trees. In Cape Coral, Florida, she went to Cape Coral High and soaked up the sun on the beach. And as a sophomore at Timpview High School in Provo, Utah, her favorite classes included TV broadcasting, choir, and drama. A veteran of stage plays, Kat loved working in a community of people coming together to create something inspiring.

No matter where she lived, Kat loved to make friends and was good at it. Never one to judge, she often encouraged friends who might be less likely to attend church activities and dances to come with her. Just the weekend before her death at a Washington Youth Conference, she helped include quieter people to make sure everyone felt involved and important. Kat cared deeply about others and they reciprocated those feelings for her.

Always energetic and full of life, Kat loved kayaking and the beach, watching movies, singing, sledding down hills, playing video games, traveling to new locations and chatting with friends and family. She could find the joy in any situation. At 10 years old, she was the flower girl at her uncle’s wedding and had such a grand time dancing her little heart out that she danced right out of her shoes, splitting them apart. Katelyn’s greatest passions in life were having fun and caring for others.

We will miss the joy she always brought into a room, her smiling face, the companionship and unconditional love she offered and her sweetness in trying to smooth over hurt feelings. But perhaps most of all, we will miss a laugh which rang louder than any we’ve ever known.

Katelyn’s funeral is scheduled for 3:30 p.m., Thursday, March 12 at the Edgemont South Stake Center, 2950 N. Canyon Road (350 East), Provo. Friends may call at the church from 1 to 3 p.m. prior to the service. The burial will take place in Provo. Condolences may be sent to info@bergmor
