Lynn Waddington

Lynn Waddington died at age 68 on Oct. 31, 2009 of pulmonary fibrosis at her Greenbank home, nurtured through her journey by loving family and friends. Humor was present in Lynn’s life to the end, and she insisted that her obituary begin: “After years of threatening to do so, she finally kicked the bucket.” It is fitting that her departure took place on her favorite holiday, Halloween, that day when the veil between the worlds is the thinnest.

Born into a New Jersey Quaker family of 13 generations, Quakerism was her life-long spiritual home and fostered her undying creativity.

She earned a master’s degree in theater arts at San Francisco State University, and did doctoral work in humanistic psychology. She taught at Sonoma State University, wrote and directed plays and formed a cluster school for the arts. She founded and ran a restoration house in Santa Rosa, Calif. until her life was grounded by Hodgkin’s lymphoma.

In 1993, Lynn joined her partner Margaret Sorrel, D.O., in Seattle and in

2001 she faced a second health challenge, breast cancer, caused by the radiation treatments for Hodgkin’s. The treatment for breast cancer led to her final terminal illness.

Living with a terminal illness was a rich time. She became a grandmother, wrote about God’s presence in her life and filmed and produced videos, her latest being “When God was Female,” a research/sculpting project of 70 Stone Age figures. She lectured and exhibited these figures in the Freeland library in July 2008.

She is survived by her partner Margaret Sorrel; daughter Kindred Gottlieb (Antony); granddaughter Genevieve; stepsons Brendan Sorrelgreen and Ethan Sorrelgreen (Judy); grandson Milo; sisters Mary Waddington and Jeanne Campbell (David); brother Bill Waddington (Dar); and many nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at University Friends Meeting in Seattle, at 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 5.

In lieu of flowers, friends are encouraged to make a memorial donation to University Friends Meeting, (4001 Ninth Ave. NE, Seattle, WA 98105) or to Whidbey Island Worship Group

(Box 691, Langley, WA 98260).
