Mae Mitchell Morter Steward died May 23, 2003 after a battle with pancreatic cancer. She was born June 26, 1909, to Fred and Ellen Morter. She was raised in several different areas of Oregon, but had the fondest memories of Astoria.
She married Jesse “Jay” Steward in 1926 in Albany, Ore. They had three children; Charlotte Jean Steward Roth of Boise, Idaho, Gordon Leroy Steward of Ventura, Calif., and Marilyn Mae Steward Dowell of Clinton.
The family settled in Southern California, where Jay died in 1946. Mrs. Steward worked and lived in the family home in Bellflower until she went to Anchorage, Alaska, in 1957. There, she married one of Jay’s brothers, Jamie “Pat” Steward. The couple had a happy marriage until his death in 1980 in Thermopolis, Wyo.
Mrs. Steward moved to Langley in 1983 to be with her daughter Marilyn and son-in-law Dennis Dowell. According to family, she loved the island and enjoyed her home, gardening and the United Methodist Church, where she was a member.
She is survived by her children; brother Melvin Morter of Clackamas, Ore.; sister Gen Stone of Fresno, Calif.; and brother W. L. Morter of Ventura. She also leaves 10 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. today, May 28, at Langley United Methodist Church.
