Margaret Lilly Peabody Smith, 87, died peacefully at home Oct. 6, 2002.
She was born July 25, 1915, to Sophie May Dell and Charles Macaulay Peabody. “Monie,” as she was known, attended Seattle schools, including Holy Names Academy. She graduated from Seattle University in 1937 and completed a master’s degree in social work at Lone Mountain.
She married Robert Lee Smith Dec. 31, 1939, at St. Joseph’s Church, Seattle. During World War II she worked in the dean’s office at Seattle University while her husband served overseas in the Navy. A devoted wife, mother, grandmother and friend, she ws active all her life in alumni associations for Seattle Prep, Forest Ridge and Seattle University. Monie was a member of her Catholic childhood group, Elizabeth Gerbel Circle, for 69 years.
She was preceded in death by her husband; a sister, Charlotte Bellman; and a grandson, Ryan M. Smith.
She left a legacy of love to five daughters, Monica P. Smith, Christina M. Mead, Carolyn Lee (Patrick Chestnut), Mary M. (Andrew Smith), and Elizabeth Lee (Terrance E. O’Neil); a son, Robert L. Smith Jr. (Mary Mead Smith); 17 grandchildren, Amy C. (Lahcen Ajbour), Tobias M. (Carol P. Smith), Jacob R. (Alethia Mead), Macaulay Smith, Kara Mead, Ryan Smith, Robert Johnson, Terese Smith, Alexander Johnson, Margaret Smith, Matthew Smith, Elizabeth Mead, Addison Smith, Benjamin Smith, Helen O’Neil and Michael O’Neil; and three great-grandchildren, Ryan James, Elle Rain and Jacob Andrew.
The family expresses great appreciation to Mrs. Smith’s devoted and loving caretakers, Kate Curry, Monica “Coco” Smith and Hospice Care.
Recitation of the rosary was Oct. 11 at Our Lady’s Chapel in St. James Cathedral. Memorial mass will be celebrated at noon today, Oct. 12, at St. Hubert Catholic Church, Langley.
