With great sorrow, we announce the passing of a long-time Freeland, WA community member, Margaret Schultz. Margaret passed away on August 7, 2024, after an accidental fall. She will always be remembered for her compassion for human and animal rights. Margaret was a forgiving, loving, generous, and pure-hearted woman. We will miss her humor and resilience. We loved her and are heartbroken over this tragic event. Margaret was born to William and Katherine Schultz on August 21, 1949, in La Jolla, CA. She graduated from high school in La Jolla in 1966 and later obtained her Master’s degree in German and Russian History from San Diego State University. Margaret was a fierce employee advocate during her career at King County Metro, from where she retired in 2005.
Her love for sailing, nature, and small communities brought her to Whidbey Island in 1997, where she settled in Freeland. Margaret’s unwavering passions in life included the beauty of the sea and everything in it, sailing, classical and folk music, and a deep love for cats, dogs, and animals in general. She was a natural swimmer and logged many miles throughout her lifetime. Margaret was an avid fisherwoman for several years. She loved to travel when she could and had many great stories to share. Margaret had many beloved pets over the years and treated each one with the respect, love, and care that every animal deserves.
Margaret was preceded in death by her parents, her father’s twin brother, Robert Schultz, her beloved aunt and namesake, Margaret Corbett Ashcroft, and her brother, William. She leaves behind grieving family members across the country and many wonderful, beloved friends near and far.
