Michael Montgomery Farmer died at home
April 2, 2011 after a lengthy battle with cancer.
Mike was born July 24, 1942 in Dallas, Ore. He grew up on his family’s farm in Rickreall, Ore., working summers in the hay fields and cherry orchards.
Mike attended Oregon State University, teaching computer classes and earning an MBA. Mike’s first job out of school was at Boeing in Renton. In 1971, Mike joined Electronic Data Systems in San Francisco, Calif. where his skill with computer programming led to a lifelong career in software development.
Mike met Laura Kellogg in San Francisco, and they were married in 1979. They moved to the early
Silicon Valley and started a software consulting company. Mike loved the technical development of mainframe software packages and continued his work through the final weeks of his life.
Mike’s two sons, Eric and Paul, were the sparkle in his eye. He was their biggest cheerleader as they played soccer and baseball and excelled in gymnastics. As they grew into men, he continued to be immensely proud of their achievements in the Marines, college and their careers.
Mike and Laura moved to Whidbey in 2003, where he continued to work by telecommuting. His biggest surprise, and continuing fascination, was the wildlife that passed by every day. He watched families of deer, eagles and quail. It gave him a secret smile to know that he was able to do his software development watching the wildlife, while the other members of his team were in office buildings.
Mike learned about junior hockey, and lured by the bright lights of Everett, was a WHL Silvertips season ticket holder for seven years, rarely missing a home game.
Mike is survived by Laura Kellogg, his wife of 32 years; sons Eric Farmer, Chicago, Ill. and Paul Farmer, Burlingame, Calif.; and brother Bill Farmer (wife Karen) in Rickreall.
Mike’s family adds a special note of appreciation to the Whidbey Hospital MAC clinic for its care over the past three years.
There are no services at Mike’s request. Arrangements are being handled by Visser Funeral Home, Langley.
