Rose F. Gurner passed away on Tuesday, Dec. 21, 2010 at her home at the Senior Suites of Urbandale.
A graveside service will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 22, 2010 at Jewish Glendale Cemetery.
Rose was born on Dec. 11, 1920 in Des Moines, Iowa. She married her husband Hal at a very young age and they made their home in Des Moines for most of their lives. Rose was a homemaker, but later went to work for Younkers at the Merle Hay Mall. When their two daughters moved to California, they decided to move there as well.
After her husband Hal passed away in Los Angeles, Rose moved near her oldest daughter and for 23 years lived close by her until moving back to Des Moines one and a half years ago.
While living on Whidbey Island in Washington state, Rose enjoyed going to her “Time Together” program at the Island County Senior Center. She also enjoyed going on the weekly Island Transit trip up the island for lunch and shopping.
While living at the Senior Suites of Urbandale she enjoyed playing Bingo, reading, going on outings and watching movies. She also enjoyed socializing and going to the monthly Jewish Federation lunches.
Rose fought till the end and yet kept her sense of humor and smile.
Rose was preceded in death by her parents, Louis and Anna Fagen, husband Hal and four siblings. Survivors include her daughters, Maureen (Damian) Greene of Clinton and Telsa (Mark) Olson of Des Moines; three grandchildren, Brandon (Sarah) Rose of Langley, Michael McNany of Tacoma and Ethan Olson of Des Moines; and one great-granddaughter, Sierra Rose of Langley. She is also survived by two sisters, Louise Fishel and Jean Miller, both formerly of Des Moines, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Rose will be missed by many, including the people who were like family to her: Robert Rose and Karen Nichter of Clinton and Brenda DesJardins of San Jose, Calif.
In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Beth El Jacob Synagogue or the Shriners Hospital of Portland, Ore., in memory of Rose Gurner. Dunn’s Funeral Home in Des Moines, Iowa is handling arrangements.
