Sarah Naomi “Omie” Puhr, née Petrie, passed away peacefully shortly after her 90th birthday, on April 12, 2021. She was born in New Waterford, Nova Scotia, Canada on Jan. 26, 1931.

Omie was the ninth of 11 children born to Florence Irene McIvor and Patrick Petrie. After completing her teaching degree, she moved to Washington, D.C., where she met her husband, James Robert Puhr, who was in Officer’s Candidate School. They were married for 65 years until Bob’s death in 2017.

She is survived by her five children, James Robert (Gail), Mary Irene (Lee), Paul Michael (Dawn), Stephen Patrick (Katy) and Gregory John, (Becky), as well as her grandchildren Sarah, Ashleigh, Brendan, Kirsten, Colleen, Jack and Tom. She is also survived by her sisters Patricia Clancy (Jim) and Olive MacDonald. She has numerous nieces and nephews from both the Petrie and Puhr sides of her family.

As a military spouse she lived in many different states, Canada and Germany, which was a particular favorite. Summers were spent on Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia whenever possible with the large extended family at her sister’s bungalow on the Bra d’Or Lakes.

She loved returning home and spending time with all her “rellies.”

Omie and Bob retired to their own home on the Bra d’Or Lakes, which they loved, before returning to the U.S. once their grandchildren were born.

They made their last home on Whidbey Island, Wash., where they were very active socially, enjoying bridge groups, square dancing, attending their grandchildren’s events and as members of St. Mary Catholic Church in Coupeville.

Omie was known as a sharp crossword solver, an excellent bridge player and a competent, intelligent and independent woman.

A private family memorial will held at a future date. Naomi will be buried with Bob at Sunnyside Cemetery.
