Scott Van Riper passed away on May 15, 2024 at home in Holland, Ohio after a 4-year battle with cancer.
Scott was born in Anchorage, Alaska on June 23, 1952 to Roy and Lesley Van Riper. Scott grew up with an older brother Jeff, and a younger sister Kimberly. Eventually the family moved to Kansas City, Missouri where Scott attended high school.
In 1971 Scott enlisted in the US Army and was sent to Vietnam where he worked as an avionics technician, and then became an assault helicopter door gunner, and was awarded a Bronze Star for outstandingly meritorious service.
After he returned home from Vietnam Scott began working as a journeyman electrician and worked for many years in the Kansas City area, followed by California, and finally moved to Whidbey Island in 1991.
Scott was hired to update the lighting at the former Casey’s grocery store, and there he met his future wife Jan Johnston. Scott and Jan were married in 1993, and Scott continued working as a journeyman electrician for Sound Electric, and various other locations from Whidbey to EasternWashington to Alaska until he retired in 2019.
Scott was preceded in death by his father Roy Van Riper and his oldest son Tony Van Riper. He is survived by Jan, his wife of 30 years, their grown children Kristin Crouch (Chris), Erin Crouch-Gardner (Joe) and Chris Van Riper, his mother Lesley Van Riper, brother Jeff Van Riper and his wife Jayne and daughter Jessica, sister Kimberly Tiller and her son David (Gayle) Tiller, and grandchildren William Watts and Rosalyn Gardner.
Scott was a humble man with a huge heart and he will be greatly missed.
