Gertrude Irene Martin (age 98) was a caring mother, successful business women, life-long volunteer, world travel, and dedicated friend. Trudy was born and raised on a small farm in Greensburg, IN. She was very close to her seven brothers and sisters, but the farm couldn’t keep her down. After graduating from Indiana’s New Point H.S., Trudy hopped in her car and headed west. Her journey took her to California where she met her future husband of 60 years, Clyde Martin. For the next 40 years, they made their home in Brea, CA.
Trudy was always looking for new adventures and opportunities. While raising three children, Trudy completed her AA degree in Cosmetology and over the years she owned and operated three beauty salons. She also acquired her Real Estate Brokers license and sold homes throughout southern California.
While visiting her son in Washington, she found a Bed & Breakfast for sale in Langley. Trudy bought the B&B and moved to Whidbey Island in 1988. Over the next 30+ years, Trudy stayed very busy on the Island. She was a Christian and a devoted member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Freeland. She was also very dedicated to many non-profit organizations including Habitat for Humanity, Big Sisters, Garden Club, and Senior Thrift.
Although she was dedicated to community volunteering, her true passion was travel. She visited more than 50 countries. She started the South Whidbey chapter of the International Friendship Force Club to help spread friendship and goodwill around the world. If she wasn’t traveling, she was hosting international travelers in her home.
Throughout her life, Trudy was never afraid to take risks. In her 70s, she took her first parachute jump. She continued to parachute and zip-line into her 90s.
Trudy’s spirit, generosity and guidance will be missed by her family, friends and the people she met around the globe. We all wish her well on her heavenly journey. She leaves behind her son (Steve), daughter (Robyn), four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. At Trudy’s request, no memorial service will be held.
