Victor Hastings, 92, of Freeland, died May 10, 2003, at Whidbey General Hospital, Coupeville.
He was born June 13, 1910, in Chicago to Ralph and Daisy Hastings. At the age of 6 he moved with his family to the prairies of Alberta, Canada, where he attended a one-room schoolhouse and lived the life of a simple farm boy. After seven years of farming hardships, Victor’s parents moved to Seattle.
After receiving a graduation certificate from Broadway High School, Victor entered into a long succession of small-business ventures with his father, which continued until his retirement in 1974. These included work at the Cushman Dam on the Olympic Peninsula; an automobile sales and repair business in Portland, Ore.; and a fuel business near the shores of Lake Union in Seattle. His greatest and most rewarding work was in the residential construction industry under the business name Hastings and Hastings, Builders. He built more than 70 single-family homes from 1952 through 1974.
In 1939 Victor married Eileen Sylvester. They had two sons, Ralph and John. Most of their family and community life was centered in the Northgate area of Seattle. In retirement, Victor and Eileen moved to Samish Island, near Bow, to be with family members and friends attracted by the island’s natural beauty and their church’s retreat center.
After Eileen’s death in 1991, Victor continued to live on Samish Island until he suffered a stroke in 2002. After that he moved to Freeland to be near his two sons.
He is survived by his sons, Ralph and John Hastings; Ralph’s daughter, Vicki Thompson; Vicki’s daughter, Sara, and husband Dave; and John’s wife, Robin Obata, and their daughter, Emiko Hastings.
A service to celebrate the life of Victor Hastings will be held at 2 p.m. May 17 at the Community of Christ church on Samish Island.
