South Whidbey will have several quick-footed, sure-armed athletes at the state 1A championship meet this year.
After the tri-district meet held in two rounds Thursday and Saturday, 15 Falcons on the track and field team will travel to Cheney for the state meet.
Hoping for a state title are senior Nick French in the javelin, senior girls 800-meter runner Jaime Rodden, senior girls long jumper Maia Sparkman and the 400-meter and 1,600-meter girls relay teams.
Several Falcons set their career-best times and marks at the tri-district meet at Woolsey Stadium in Shoreline. Senior Mackenzie Hezel set her best toss at 111 feet, 9 inches. Maia Sparkman leaped over her previous best long jump distance and placed third at 17 feet, 2 inches. She will also run in the 400-meter relay with Anna Leski, Baily Forsyth and Madi Boyd, who ran the sixth-fastest time among 1A teams this year in 50.54 seconds.
Boyd, Hezel, Sparkman and Rodden will comprise the all-senior 1,600-meter team after placing fourth in 4:09.23, within 1 second of the South Whidbey High School record and the third fastest time in school history.
Rodden ran a career-best race in the 800 in 2:18.91 for fourth place, which is also the fourth-best time in the state this year. According to Falcon head coach Mark Eager, Rodden ran the fifth-fastest time in school history and the best Falcon mark in 15 years.
On the boys team, sophomore Tanner Lobdell qualified in the 100-meter in 11.52. His time put him in fourth place at the tri-district meet.
