South Whidbey became the latest victim of the Coupeville High School volleyball team as the Wolves blanked the visiting Falcons 3-0 Tuesday, Oct. 1.
Undefeated Coupeville upped its North Sound Conference record to 2-0 and its overall mark to 5-0. South Whidbey dropped to 1-1 and 2-3.
The Falcons play another unbeaten team when they host King’s (2-0, 5-0) at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 3.
Coupeville topped the Falcons 25-16, 25-17, 25-17.
South Whidbey hung with the Wolves early in the first game, trailing by only two, 12-10, thanks in part to two kills from Emma Hodson and one each from Morgan Batchelor and Arianna Briggs.
From there, Coupeville went on a 10-4 run to put the set away.
The Falcons were stung by five service errors.
The scoring in the second set followed a similar pattern.
The Wolves held just a one point advantage, 10-9, before going on an 8-2 run to take control.
The Falcons couldn’t muster an attack in the set, according to coach Mandy Jones.
“We had zero offense,” she said, noting her club recorded only two kills in the game.
Coupeville zipped to a 9-2 lead in the third set, then four kills by Hodson and a tip and block by Batchelor helped the Falcons get to within two, 12-10.
A six-point run by the Wolves secured the match.
Hodson finished with eight kills, two blocks and “passed well,” according to Jones.
Kayla Knauer also had a strong night passing, Jones said, and recorded nine digs.
Batchelor, one of four freshmen who saw action, added five kills and two blocks.
