The Falcon girls soccer team’s offense found the back of an opponent’s net for the first time this season Tuesday.

And it happened against Whidbey Island rivals, the Coupeville Wolves.

Falcon senior Madi Boyd scored goals in the 29th and 57th minutes to give South Whidbey its first scores and first victory of the season.

“Our outside (midfielders) did really good,” Boyd said. “They pretty much handed me the goals; they were beautiful passes.”

Boy, were they. South Whidbey dominated possession throughout the game, rarely letting Coupeville’s forwards and midfielders push beyond midfield. Through the first half, Coupeville only got one shot off, and it sailed right of the goal defended by Falcon sophomore keeper Cassie Neil. South Whidbey recorded nine shots on goal and one score.

“Our passing has gotten more accurate,” Boyd said. “We always play our hearts out when we play Coupeville. We were really determined to get a win.”

Boyd’s first goal came off a deflection in the box in the 29th minute after a barrage of shots by Falcon strikers. Her second score was on a cross by Carmen Colar in the 57th minute.

South Whidbey held an opponent scoreless for the first time this year, having lost by a combined 17-0 in its previous four matches. The game also held Coupeville winless this season.

Defensively, South Whidbey was able to move up the field and away from Neil in the box. A lineup switch had former midfielder Maia Sparkman, a senior, move to defense where she and fellow senior Katie Sibley cleared a few through balls by Coupeville. Claiming a shutout victory against a rival was a major accomplishment for the Falcon captain, who has not recorded a convincing win against the Wolves in her career.

“It’s been a really frustrating build up,” Sparkman said.

On Thursday, Sparkman scored the lone goal against Lakewood in a 2-1 loss.
