After finishing third place at the district tournament, Oak Harbor’s boys golf team brought a full team to state, which took place May 21 and May 22 at Hawks Prairie Links Golf Course in Lacey.
“I was very proud of the whole team and how they finished the season out,” boys golf coach David Smith said in an email. It was the first time since he started coaching at Oak Harbor, more than 12 years, that a full team competed at the state tournament.
Smith said the conditions for the first round were windy, rainy and cold. Seniors Logan Wyer and Tobias Wood qualified for the second day shooting a 75 and a 78. Smith added Anders Spencer was on track for a good day but had some bad luck on the last four holes.
At the end of the first day, Wyer was tied for eighth place and Wood was in 30th place out of 142 players.
The weather improved the second day with Wood shooting an 81.
“Tobias had some tough holes but kept his head in the games and played hard to finish out,” Smith said, adding Wood had some bad luck but played a very good round.
Wyer shot an 80 on the second day. Smith said Wyer had a couple of bad holes but kept playing hard and finished the round with a birdie on 18, which was his third of the day.
“I was also very proud of Logan for keeping his head in the game and not giving up,” Smith said.
Overall, Wyer shot 155 and tied for 22nd while Wood shot 159 and tied for 43rd.
While the boys were competing in Lacey, the girls golf team was competing in the state 3A tournament at Eagles Pride Golf Course in DuPont.
The girls team also brought a full team to the two-day tournament. The Wildcats finished the tournament in eighth place as a team.
Coach Andy Wesley said in an email the girls met their goal for the season of qualifying as a team for the second day of the tournament. The Wildcats were in seventh place at the end of the first day and dropped to eighth place at the end of the second.
It rained the first day and the team battled through the elements, Wesley said.
Junior Addison Nations scored a 95 the first day and a 78 the second day, sophomore Reagan Syring scored an 88 the first day and a 96 the second day, sophomore Scarlett Nations shot a 90 the first day and a 97 the second day, sophomore Hailey Jenzen shot a 95 the first day and a 98 the second day, and sophomore Annalise Wesley scored 105 the first day and 94 the second day.
