The South Whidbey boys basketball team lost 73-61 to Coupeville Tuesday. The Falcons were behind in the first three quarters, and though they managed a two-point lead in the fourth, it wasn’t enough.
“We started off bad, they made points and we struggled to get back,” said forward Adrian Cortes. “In our losses, we end up with one or two quarters in single digits. We have to be more consistent and maintain a sense of urgency in all four quarters.”
Falcon coach Scott Collins agreed.
“They jumped on us early, 31-18. At the half they went on a 9-0 run to start out the third quarter for a 40-18 lead,” he said.
Collins was pleased with the second- half effort as the Falcons battled back from a huge deficit.
“Down 40-18, we cut the lead to
62-56 with 3:40 remaining,” he said. “But we ran out of time outs and Coupeville did a great job of making free throws.”
He noted that Cole Erikson played a great second half with nine points in
10 minutes of play before fouling out.
“And Riley was Riley. He had 20 points and six three-pointers on the night.”
After Newman, Scott Stallman had 11, Jeff Brasko and Cole Erikson nine each and Chris Carey, five.
