Slipping by visiting Bush 3-2, the South Whidbey High School tennis team picked up its second win of the season Wednesday, Sept. 26.
The win avenged a 4-1 loss to the Blazers Sept. 10.
Levi Buck secured the team win with a comeback victory in first singles.
With the team score tied at 2-2, Buck dropped the first set 6-4 but rallied to win the second 6-3. The third set went to a super tie-breaker — the first to 10, win by two. Buck trailed 9-6 and faced defeat on the next surrendered point but roared back to win 11-9.
“He’s playing smarter tennis, figuring it out,” coach Karyle Kramer said.
Buck lost to the same opponent, Ivan Repin, earlier this season.
Brent Batchelor, playing singles for the first time, won in second singles 6-2, 6-1.
“It was a closer match and Brent worked on his strategy and composure — difficult to do when the pressure is all on you and you’re trying to think and play and keep it together,” Kramer said. “Brent showed he’s ready to step it up. Solid win.”
Max Rodriguez and Soren Bratrude earned the other team point with a 6-1, 7-5 win in third doubles.
Brent de Wolf and Ian Maddox lost in first doubles 6-3, 6-2; and Joey Lane and Ranger Buck fell in second doubles 6-4, 6-1.
“The season is moving quickly — we’re already into round two, (the) second half of the season,” Kramer said. “A few more weeks of play and then bi-districts Oct. 19 and 20.”
South Whidbey (2-4) hosts University Prep at 3:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 27.
