Coupeville Wolves break late-game tie to beat South Whidbey fastpitch

Coupeville and South Whidbey were deadlocked at 5-5 going into the final inning of Friday’s fastpitch game until the Wolves ran away with a 9-5 victory.

Coupeville and South Whidbey were deadlocked at 5-5 going into the final inning of Friday’s fastpitch game until the Wolves ran away with a 9-5 victory.

“We just kind of fell apart there,” said Falcon head coach Tim Collins. “And they strung some hits together.”

Facing Coupeville’s top batter, Falcon freshman Kacie Hanson started off the seventh inning with a strikeout. The following three batters reached first base to load the bases. That set up a two RBI double to left-center field to break the tie and score the go-ahead runs that ultimately proved to be more than enough to beat the Falcons.

In its final frame, South Whidbey had three consecutive outs.

“We just have to learn how to win,” Collins said.

Hanson recorded six strikeouts against Coupeville, following a 10-strikeout performance against Archbishop Murphy earlier last week.

Falcons Chantel Brown, Haley Viers and Anne Madsen each recorded two hits. Both of Madsen’s were doubles. Chloe Huffman knocked a double to the fence as well. South Whidbey hitters were fanned three times and reached base on a walk three times.

Coupeville had seven walks.

The Falcons are on the road this week against Cedarcrest on Tuesday, after The Record went to press, and at Lakewood on Thursday.
