Falcon girls move into third place
The South Whidbey fastpitch softball team played a solid all-around game against the visiting Lakewood Cougars on Monday, putting together tough defense to go with a fourth inning nine-run rally that led the Falcons to an 11-0 victory.
The girls are now third in the Cascade Conference, 6-3, behind Archbishop Murphy (8-1) and Granite Falls (8-1).
“The left side of our infield played error-free defense, which is a huge contributor for the success of this team,” said Falcon coach Chuck Burton.
With Jazmyn Graham at shortstop and Alannah Alber at third base, the Cougars were unable to get any base hits.
“Both players made line drive catches, fielded ground balls with their hands facing backwards and made nice throws to Samantha Pope at first base to get crucial outs,” Burton said.
South Whidbey’s Rebecca Stratton got her third league victory, pitching her second shutout game of the season.
South Whidbey’s bats came alive in the fourth inning, scoring nine runs on eight hits.
Catcher Amanda Cochran hit a double that scored two RBI’s. Two batters later, Stratton hit a base shot that also drove in two.
“The girls are playing with heart and spirit, really coming together and showing the league they are serious about fastpitch,” Burton said.
