Late Thursday, the South Whidbey boys golf team beat Cedarcrest

211 to 225 at par-36 Carnation Golf Course.

“Shane Thompson played very consistent and he was our top finisher with an even par 36,” Falcon coach Steve Jones said. “Collectively, the team’s short game was much improved, reflected by their average of 16 putts per golfer for nine holes.”

Thompson finished with 36; Lincoln Hawthorne had 43 and Perry Cooley, Brooks Guetlin and Tommy Boyle each shot 44.

On Monday, the boys golf team beat Sultan 188 to 217 at the par-33 Blue Boy West Golf Course in Sultan.

“The sky was sunny and course conditions were dry and very playable,” Jones said. “Brooks (Guetlin) was tied with Sultan’s Johnny Bardwell until he sank a 25-foot birdie putt on the final hole to earn medalist honors.”

Guetlin finished with 33; Thompson had 37, Cooley 38, Hawthorne 39 and Yingling 41.

The Falcons have been on a roll lately. Last week, revenge was best served on a chilly golf course, as the boys beat Archbishop Murphy 191-204 on the par-32 course at Holmes Harbor Golf Club. Earlier, the team had lost to Murphy by a single stroke.

Guetlin led the Falcons with a low mark of 34, Thompson had 36, Cooley 38, Yingling 40, Boyle

42 and Hawthorn with 45.

The boys now lead the conference at 7-1, but Jones isn’t taking things for granted.

“It was a day of redemption against the Wildcats,” he said. “We’re just where we want to be, and I’m confident we can beat anyone in our league, though King’s is always tough. We have our sights on a third league championship.”

Guetlin said he was frustrated with his putting against Murphy.

“I played well for eight of nine greens; OK but not good enough. Then I finished with a 30-footer to win,” he said. “It’s all good now that the weather’s improved.”
