The Falcon boys soccer team recovered from losing to Sultan and kept Lakewood scoreless in a 2-0 victory late last week.
Noah Moeller scored both goals on assists from senior co-captain Pat Myatt.
South Whidbey (2-1 in Cascade Conference; 4-1 overall) was stunned by a 1-0 loss to the Sultan Turks (2-1; 2-2) on March 25.
“We couldn’t quite put it together,” said Falcon senior co-captain Dean Freundlich. “It was unfortunate.”
Given the Falcons’ 8-2 thrashing of Granite Falls and Sultan’s 0-2 record, they rightly believed they would win. The Turks were larger and played more physically than South Whidbey expected.
The loss taught the team an important lesson, said Falcon co-captain Pat Myatt.
“We just weren’t ready for their style of play,” Myatt said. “We just didn’t capitalize on some big points.”
“We understand what we need to do now, and we worked out our offense,” he added. “Everything’s looking good now.”
Myatt said his position changed to a center-forward after losing to Sultan. Now, he will be on the ball and passing more.
His new style was on display Tuesday against the Lakewood Cougars. Myatt assisted both scores, both in the second half.
“We expected to win, but we came out like we expected to lose,” Myatt said.
“I just thought we could create more chances [to score] with me in the middle,” Myatt said. “It’s not sacrificing, I’m not sad. I’m not up top or as high anymore.”
South Whidbey’s defense continued its dominance and kept Lakewood scoreless. The Falcons’ defense has allowed five goals in four games, two came in the second half after securing at least a three-goal lead.
Myatt praised senior goalkeeper and co-captain TJ Russell.
“TJ played phenomenal — one of the best games I’ve seen him play,” Myatt said.
The Falcon boys soccer team traveled to face Island rival Coupeville (1-2; 1-2) on Friday. Myatt compared Coupeville to Sultan in size and physicality, and said the South Whidbey squad is more confident against those kinds of teams now.
“We know that we can just pass the ball around them and get shots off,” Myatt said.
