The entire South Whidbey boys swim team is headed to the state competition this week after a victorious fourth place finish at the 2A District Championships in Anacortes on Feb. 10.
Freshman Caleb Lewis, junior Tyson Prendergast and sophomores Jack Hempel and Rowan Jung are the Falcons that comprise the small but mighty team, which is coached by Chris Erickson of the Mukilteo School District and South Whidbey resident Rob Jung.
Sophomore Finn Price, the lone swimmer from Coupeville High School, also made a splash at the district meet, placing 10th out of the 11 teams that competed.
Hempel placed first in two events, the 50 yard freestyle and the 100 yard freestyle. Jung took third place in the 200 yard freestyle and the 500 yard freestyle. Lewis placed third in the 100 yard backstroke. Prendergast finished sixth in the 100 yard butterfly and fourth in the 100 yard breaststroke. All four boys placed second for the 200 yard medley relay and third for the 400 yard freestyle relay.
For just four kids, Erickson said, fourth place as a team at districts is “pretty dang good.”
The Falcons advance to the 2A state meet this week, which takes place Feb. 15-17 at Newport High School in Bellevue.
