The South Whidbey girls tennis team dodged raindrops at Bellingham Monday, but had perfect weather Thursday.

“Believe it or not, we did play,” said Falcon coach Tom Kramer about the trip north.

At Bellingham, South Whidbey’s Lindsey Newman won 6-0, 6-1; Natalie Wheeler lost 3-6, 1-6; Maya Hough lost 1-6, 0-6 and Andrea Berg lost 1-6, 1-6.

In doubles action, Falcons Shannon Craig and Julia Iversen won 6-3, 6-4; Victoria Comfort and Ana Weeks lost 4-6,

4-6 and Jenn Gemkow and Katie Holt won 6-3,6-4.

“We played well at times given that this is the day after spring break,” Kramer noted. “Bellingham is one of the top three teams in the district this year and always play tough at home.”

On Thursday, the girls faced Lakewood and had a very good day.

Newman won 6-0, 6-1; Wheeler won 6-3, 6-1; Weeks won 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 and Hough won 7-5, 6-3.

Newman said her match with Cougar Hannah Ross was filled with lots of good rallies and was overall a fun experience, at least for Newman.

“Right now, I’m working on slices and dinks, which is a ball that barely goes over the net and dies,” she explained. “The toughest girl I’ve played so far is Bellingham’s Molly Beaumont, so I’m also concentrating on topspins and my second serves.”

In doubles action, Craig and Iversen won 6-1, 6-0; Comfort and Holt won 6-0, 6-0 and Riley O’Sullivan and Alexa Brewster won 6-3, 6-1.

“Lakewood graduated a large group of seniors last year so inexperience was a big problem for them,” Kramer noted. “Riley and Alexa filled in nicely at third doubles where their aggressive play helped them gain control.”
