The South Whidbey wrestling team joined 20 other schools — many rated 4A and 3A — at the Everett Classic over the weekend.

“We were able to split the team into varsity and junior varsity as a way to get more mat time for each guy,” Falcon coach Jim Thompson explained. “It worked and we did well, coming in 15th ahead of Kamiak, Cascade and Arlington, among others.”

Everett won the day, followed by Squalicum and Lake Stevens.

On the varsity mats, Colton Vaughn (119-pound weight class) placed second for South Whidbey, while Evan Thompson (130) and Chris Monell (189) both came in fifth.

“Chris is usually at 171 pounds, so I was very proud of his performance; I think he should have taken third,” Thompson said.

JV grapplers Patrick Monell (152), Daniel Childers (160) and Ben Jacobson-Ross (140) all came in first after four bouts each.

“Jeff Kunellis and Montana Johnson won two and lost one of their matches, so we did well and everyone got to wrestle,” Thompson noted.
