South Whidbey wrestling has gone another year without a state placer at the Mat Classic.
Falcon senior wrestlers Hunter Newman (138 pounds) and Chase Barthlett (285) were eliminated from the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association class 1A state wrestling championships on Friday at the Tacoma Dome.
Barthlett went 1-2. He lost to Port Townsend’s Jacob Massie in the first round, but then bounced back with a second period pin over Castle Rock’s Wesley Hall in the consolations. With a chance to place in the top-eight, Barthlett was pinned by Colville’s Sawyer Hughes.
Newman, wrestling with a broken hand, lost to the eventual runner-up in Brent Hodgson 6-1 in the first round. He was eliminated by Royal’s Regan Callahan when he allowed a takedown in the final 10 seconds.
The Falcons’ most recent state placer was senior Patrick Monell, who finished sixth at 220 pounds in 2013.
