Falcon wrestler Evan Thompson (135-pound weight class) made it to the finals and placed second at the Forks Tournament last week, but lost in his final bout with Colby Wright of Anacortes.

Other standouts for South Whidbey were Colton Vaughn (125) and Patrick Monell (160); both came in third against grapplers from Tenino and Anacortes.

“Colton should have taken the whole thing,” said Falcon coach Jim Thompson. “He was ahead on points 6-3 and was attempting to increase the spread by turning the other kid, by being aggressive, and somehow was turned himself. I can never fault someone for going after an opponent hard.”

Van Morgen (152), Chris Monell (189) and Jeff Kunellis (112) placed fourth in their class.

Much-larger 3A-rated Klayahwa Secondary School came out on top in the team standings of the seven schools at the tournament; South Whidbey was on the bottom, mainly due to the team’s inability to field half of the mandatory 14 weight classes. Teams face a six-point deduction each time a weight class isn’t filled.

“The kids were good on their feet and competitive in every match,” Thompson said. “They wrestled very well for such a young group, but we all know we have work to do.”

Today, the South Whidbey boys travel to Port Townsend. At 7 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 17, the wrestlers make their presence felt at home when Lakewood visits to open league meets.
