Picking up a win for the first time at Cedar Park Christian, the South Whidbey High School soccer team stayed on top of the North Sound Conference standings by beating the Eagles 3-0 Tuesday, Oct. 8.
The Falcons also tied host Bear Creek 3-3 in a non-league match Thursday, Oct. 10.
South Whidbey had never beaten CPC on its turf field since the Eagles joined the conference in 2014. Tuesday, the Falcons dominated play and upped their league record to 6-0 (10-0-1 overall). Third-place Cedar Park Christian fell to 3-3 (6-4).
Simone White started the scoring with an unassisted goal, then Sidney Ollis tallied on a nice volley just before the break on Ashton Helseth’s corner kick.
Elizabeth Haines’ cross in the second half set up Mikenna Wicher for the final goal.
“Our team played strong defense throughout the game and limited Cedar Park Christian to five shots on goal,” coach Terry Swanson said.
The Bear Creek match was physical and exciting, according to Swanson, as “both teams had chances to score throughout the game.”
The Grizzlies (8-2-1) scored first, then the Falcons took the lead on two White goals. White’s second score was a “beautiful header,” Swanson said, off a Helseth corner kick.
South Whidbey went up 3-1 when Kelly Murnane converted a penalty kick after a Bear Creek handball.
BC scored two late goals to earn the tie.
“We had lost two midfielders to injuries in the second half and we had some miscommunication of who was picking up open players,” Swanson said. “We adjusted and ended the game strong with several strong runs at their goal.”
“The Bear Creek style of play was valuable for us to encounter as it helps us determine our weaknesses so we can improve individually and as a team,” he added. “Bear Creek won state girls soccer titles in 2011 and 2012 and is well-coached.”
South Whidbey hosts Granite Falls (3-3, 6-5) at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 15.
