The South Whidbey volleyball team got the win it needed the most when it split a pair of matches on the final day of the district 1A tournament Tuesday, Oct. 30, at Lynden Christian.
The Falcons, with the help of record-setting performances, came back from a 2-0 deficit to defeat Meridian 3-2 in a loser-out match that guaranteed South Whidbey a spot in the bi-district tournament.
After topping the Trojans, South Whidbey lost 3-1 to Nooksack Valley in a match to determine seeding – third and fourth – into the bi-district playoffs.
At bi-district Saturday, Nov. 3, at Meridian, the Falcons will need to win two straight to qualify for state. They will face the to-be-determined third-place team from the District 2 tournament at 11 a.m.
The winner faces second-ranked Lynden Christian at 1 p.m. in a winner-to-state/loser-out match.
South Whidbey 3, Meridian 2
The Trojans won the first two games 25-21, putting South Whidbey on the cusp of elimination.
Behind sterling performances by Emma Leggett and Chloe Johnson, the Falcons stormed back, winning the final three sets 25-21, 25-18, 15-7.
Leggett blasted 34 kills, the most by a Falcon since 2010; she also had 11 digs.
Johnson dished out a school record 54 assists.
Alyssa Ludtke added seven kills, five digs and two blocks; and Arianna Briggs had five kills and four blocks.
Nooksack Valley 3, South Whidbey 1
The Pioneers won 25-21, 25-21, 20-25, 25-23.
Leggett collected 18 kills, Ludtke nine, Emma Hodson eight and Megan Leonard three.
Johnson recorded 39 assists, three kills and two aces.
