After battling through a physical 0-0 tie with Cedarcrest earlier in the week, the South Whidbey High School soccer team breezed by visiting Sultan 7-0 Friday, April 6.
The Falcons dominated the match, out-shooting the Turks 48-1.
The easy win allowed coach Emerson Robbins to turn the match over to his younger players in the second half.
“For the last 20 minutes of the game, we had all six of our freshmen in,” Robbins said. “As usual, they performed admirably.”
Other standouts included left mid Graham Colar, who was injured last season.
“Graham made constant successful runs on the left flank, consistently beating defenders and getting to the goal line and then crossing or sending perfectly targeted passes to an oncoming teammate,” Robbins said. “He had one goal and two assists but could have had many more assists if the runners had been able to knock those well-placed passes in the back of the net.”
Aidan Donnelly scored two goals; Michael Lux also scored twice; and Silas Batiste scored off an assist from Nevin Daniels and contributed with “pinpoint passing” and “winning many headers,” according to Robbins.
Defensively, freshman Taylor Daniels filled in at keeper, taking over for Julian Inches, who was injured in the Cedarcrest match. Daniels “did a fine job,” Robbins said.
“Our back line was impenetrable,” Robbins added. “They continue to shine.”
The win gave the Falcons (3-2-1, 4-2-2) some momentum heading into a difficult week.
First, South Whidbey hosts league-leading Archbishop Murphy (6-0, 6-1-1) at 6 p.m. Tuesday, April 10, and then travels to King’s (4-1-1, 6-1-2) at 4 p.m. Friday to face the second-place Knights.
