Everything about South Whidbey High School’s football team’s trip to Chelan went well except the result on the scoreboard.
The Goats (2-1) blanked the Falcons 13-0 Friday, Sept. 14.
“It was a good trip,” coach Mark Hodson said. “I was a good time. The weather was good, the food was good, the game was good. We just didn’t end up winning the game; we were defeated by a better team.”
“Chelan’s defense was good, and so was ours,” he added.
The Goats scored a touchdown in the first quarter, and the game remained 7-0 until midway trough the final period.
Both teams reached the red zone only twice. Chelan was able to capitalize on its opportunities; South Whidbey couldn’t.
The Falcons were not able to generate much on offense; CH Chapman led the club with 45 yards on nine carries.
The South Whidbey defense kept the Falcons in the game, putting reins on a Goat offense that came into the match averaging over 40 points per game.
Hodson praised the defensive work of Kobe Balora, Kole Nelson and Wyatt De Mers.
He also liked the work of defense backs Alex Black and Kody Newman, who played “really strong games, breaking up several key passes.”
The Falcons (2-1) finish out the non-league portion of their schedule when they go to Concrete (0-3) at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 21.
Hodson likes the progress his team has made as it nears North Sound Conference play.
“We are getting to where we need to be,” he said. “The kids are competing well.
“Concrete will play a physical game, which will be good for us.”
