The South Whidbey soccer team defeated the Friday Harbor Wolverines 9-0 on a soggy Waterman Field Saturday.

The win couldn’t have come at a better time for the Falcons, who have been plagued with injuries. The boys are 0-3 in the Cascade Conference, 1-3 overall following losses to Port Townsend, Cedarcrest and a 1-0 fall to Lakewood.

Adrian Cortes and Jeff Brasko each had a couple of goals for the Falcons, while Henry Mead, Noah Moeller and Pat Myatt contributed one each.

Wait, that’s only seven points.

“The Wolverines scored on themselves,” said Falcon coach Joel Gerlach. “Their goalie couldn’t stop some loose balls in the rain and the ball bounced into the net. Twice.”

Goalies Keegan Harshman in the first half and Daniel Quintero in the second kept a close watch on Wolverines Nick Roberts and Cameron Byington.

Mead said the field — it rained all day — wasn’t as bad as it looked.

“We played a decent game, but their guys are pretty young; I think they only had 14, so there wasn’t much back-up,” he said. “This season, we’ve been shuttling people into spots they aren’t used to and that’s hurt us.”

Brasko noted that the spongy, muddy grass made things “kind of skippy, so that the ball went places we weren’t expecting.”

After a straight-ahead goal past the keeper for his first score, Brasko received a diagonal kick from Dino Michaelides.

“The goalie came out and I was able to kick it in to his left,” Brasko said.

Cortes described his own efforts.

“My first was a header in the first half off a corner kick from Noah (Moeller),” he recalled. “The second was a breakaway contest between me and their keeper.

“I won.”

Gerlach is disappointed in the year to date, but was glad to see the team score some much-needed goals.

“It’s time to turn things around,” he said. “With four games, three on the road, in six days, plus injuries and guys out sick, that has caused problems for us.”
