No other team has played Archbishop Murphy as tough as the Falcon baseball team has this season.

“The sad thing, though, is there’s nothing to show for it,” noted Falcon coach Dave Guetlin as the Falcons dropped another heartbreaker to Murphy by a score of 4-1.

The final game of the series was all about pitching.

With the score 0-0 into the fourth inning, Falcon pitcher Luke Hodson allowed only one hit. Murphy hurler Jake Henley was also up to the task, allowing two Falcon hits in the first four innings.

The Falcons took the lead first in the top of the fifth when Colton Wilson smacked a lead-off single to left. Jon Adams then followed with a base on balls and Eric Sparks laid down a perfect sacrifice bunt to move both runners up a base. Mick Poynter hustled down the line and beat out a misplayed ball, which allowed Wilson to score from third, making it 1-0 for South Whidbey.

The Wildcats came right back to tie the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the fifth as a lead-off walk came around to score with two outs. In the sixth inning, Murphy put the game away when Hodson began to tire.

“With a single out, Murphy found a seeing-eye hit to the outfield, followed by Wildcat Ty Kane’s home run to center field,” Guetlin said. “It was a great game but fell just short for the Falcons.”

The Falcons travel to Granite Falls today, then are home at 4 p.m. on Friday, May 1 for senior day and the final game of the series with the Tigers.
