Two rain-delayed make-up games against the Sultan Turks brought victory to the Falcon fastpitch softball team Tuesday.

“The rain, hail and snow finally gave way to the sunshine that dried out the Lady Falcons softball diamond,” said Falcon coach Chuck Burton.

The first game proved to be the best, with Katy Piehler (2-and-0 in league ) pitching her way to a four-hit victory for the Falcons, winning 7-1.

“Katy had a shutout going into the top of the seventh, but the Falcon defense could not stop the Turks leadoff batter from scoring,” Burton said. “We were playing to get the final three outs of the game to secure the victory, which meant sacrificing the run crossing the plate to get a crucial second out.”

Melanie Murphy, Samantha Pope, Alannah Alber and Nicole Parra sparked the Falcons offense by hitting doubles that helped score the seven runs.

Energized by the weather and its win, South Whidbey scored 14 runs in the first inning of the second game, on the way to a 22-0 shutout victory in five innings.

Pitcher Rebecca Stratton got her second league victory for South Whidbey in the shutout.

The Falcons are 4-3 in the Cascade Conference.

Sultan played a solid first game, but had to use all its top pitching.

“After we scored 14 runs in the first inning and held on defense, I shut down our offense by having the batters sacrifice bunt and not swing away or having runners steal bases,” Burton said.

The girls face Lakewood at 4 p.m. Monday, April 20 at their home field.
