Drew Fry pitched a one-hit shutout and his teammates backed him with plenty of offense as the South Whidbey High School baseball team routed visiting Sultan 16-0 in five innings Monday, April 1.
The Falcons (6-1, 9-1) and Turks (0-4, 0-9) meet again in Sultan Wednesday, April 3, and then complete the series back in Langley at 4 p.m. Friday, April 5.
Fry was tossing a perfect game until surrendering a one-out double in the fifth inning; he struck out four.
The Falcons combined five hits with nine walks and five errors to produce their 16 runs.
South Whidbey got things going in the second inning with four runs on no hits. Walks to Dexter Jokinen, Ethan Petty, Nick Flahery and Alex Black, an error and sacrifice by Fry produced the runs.
After two errors started the third inning, a double by Nick Black and singles from Aston Leland and Alex Black drove in four runs; a fifth scored on an error.
The Falcons polished off the Turks with a seven-run fourth. Walks to Fry, Nick Young, Leland and Flaherty were mixed with doubles by Kody Newman and Jokinen to collect the seven spot.
