The South Whidbey girls soccer team fought back to beat Granite Falls 4-2 Saturday.

“This was an important win for us since it put us in fourth place in the conference,” said Falcon coach Paul Arand. “The game revealed our persistence and perseverance as a team, even as we were behind much of the game.”

The Tigers scored first with a 20-yard shot after dribbling through the Falcon defense.

But seconds later, Falcon Karissa Thomas took the ball 50 yards on the kick-off to score before stunned Granite Falls players could rally.

The score was 2-1 Tigers at the half after a Granite Falls penalty kick barely cleared Natasha Kamps’ outstretched arms.

In the second period, Megan Larmore received a pass from Christine Johnson before Larmore turned and finished to the lower right corner from 10 yards out.

Paige Miller dribbled the ball down the right sideline, beating her defender, and finished a power shot to the near post, and Morgan Thomson deflected a corner kick by Julia Iversen for the final goal of the game.

“Laura Barrow snuffed out numerous threats as the Tigers tried to play the ball deep behind our back line,” Arand said.

“Shannon Craig and MacKenzie Peterson did a nice job containing Tiger Katie Cashman. Liz Adams played rock-solid defense all over the field. Iversen and Laurie Robinson played an important role in setting up our forwards,” he added. “And goalie Natasha Kamps had a fabulous stop on a long hard ball to the upper left side of the net late in the game to preserve our lead.”

At 6 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 2, the Falcons welcome island rival Coupeville to Waterman Field.
