South Whidbey’s boys soccer team opened its season with a blistering scoring pace at Friday Harbor High School earlier this week.

The Falcons badgered the Wolverines with 10 goals, which averages to one goal every eight minutes. Falcon boys soccer head coach Joel Gerlach said his offense kept the ball upfield and limited Friday Harbor to one shot on goal in the first half.

“It wasn’t perfect, but it was pretty good,” Gerlach said.

Miles Goodman scored three goals and had an assist to lead the Falcon scorers. James Young had two goals and one assist. Noah Moeller scored one goal and had three assists.

Senior co-captains Dean Freundlich and Pay Myatt each scored one goal. David Woodbury and Jimmy Price each scored a goal. Sophomore Cameron Coupe had an assist and senior co-captain and goalkeeper TJ Russell also had an assist.

Russell and the defense kept the Wolverines scoreless through the first half.

“[Russell] did just a great job organizing the defense,” Gerlach said.

Brett Paul scored the lone Friday Harbor goal in the second half, after Gerlach substituted his bench into the game to evaluate his varsity team. Gerlach said he had his team experiment with possessing the ball in the second half, and that’s when Friday Harbor scored.

Friday Harbor had 12 players in rotation, compared to South Whidbey’s 19.

“They just don’t have the depth any of the other teams we play will have,” Gerlach said.
