South Whidbey’s Will Hallberg out-jumped his Falcon rival Andy Bennett to take first in the triple jump Thursday, with a distance of 45 feet, 5½ inches, a school record. Bennett was second with 42-5.
The venue was a triple track meet against Cascade Conference schools Lakewood and Coupeville. In team scoring for the boys, Lakewood was first with 76.5 points, South Whidbey second with 55 and Coupeville third with 37.5.
In the girls events, Lakewood edged the Falcons by a single point, 76-75, and Coupeville posted 20 for third.
“It was good chance for some of our top athletes to see what they could do,” said Falcon coach Doug Fulton. “And several did very well against some of the league’s top runners, jumpers and throwers.”
Falcon Jon Poolman delivered a one-two punch in the dash, taking first in the 100-meter dash in 11.42 seconds and first in the 200-meter in 23.37. In the 1,600-meter distance run, Sam Lee was first in 4:38.65.
Bennett placed first in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 41.83.
In throwing, South Whidbey swept the discus event. Zach Idso was first with 132-05, Danny Zuver second with 109-07 and Jackson Engstrom third with 105-07.
Engstrom put his shot 41-05.5 for second place and Zuver was third with 38-11.
Taking a break from running, Poolman took second place in the javelin with 123-04.
Finally, Bennett and Hallberg reversed position in the long jump; Bennett took first with 21-07.5 and Hallberg second with 20-11.
McKenzie Walker, coming back from last year’s leg injury, blistered the track with a winning time of 13.54 in the 100-meter dash. Freshman Anna Hood placed third in the 200-meter with 30.26.
Walker also brought home a first place in the 400-meter run with 1:06.73. Lilianna Stelling took third in the 800-meter in 2:38.67.
The SWHS girls did well in distance events. Nora Felt was second in the 1,600-meter run with 6:19.79; Emily Martin placed second in the 3,200 meter in 13:55.06 and Aly Chapman was right behind at 14:07.76.
Laura Barrow took first in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 51.94.
Laurie Robinson, Walker, Barrow and Sarah Cepowski placed second in the 400-meter relay in 4:40.12.
In the discus throw, freshman Angelina Berger took first place with a throw of
72-04, and teammate Kelsey Engstrom was second with 64 even. Engstrom and Berger placed second and third in the shotput with 28-10.75 and 25-01 respectively.
Cayla Calderwood hurled her javelin 93-09 for second, then placed first in the high jump with 5 feet and first in the long jump with 16-02.5.
Today, the Falcons are in Yakima for the Don Holder Relays as they gear up for the monster 27th Westling Invite — 900 or more athletes from 15 schools — coming up on Saturday, April 24 at Waterman Field.
