He’s done it again.

South Whidbey senior soccer co-captain Pat Myatt scored three goals in a 3-1 victory against Lakewood on April 19.

“Now we call him Hat-trick Patrick,” said South Whidbey head soccer coach Joel Gerlach.

Myatt scored his first goal in the seventh minute on a free kick. He began his motion to the outside post and crossed the kick inside for the goal and a 1-0 lead that held through halftime.

“It was pretty special,” Myatt said of his three goals. “We came onto the field and just played hard.”

Early in the second half, Myatt was called for a foul and gave Lakewood a penalty kick. The Falcons’ senior goalie and co-captain TJ Russell stopped the kick and tallied another save, one of his 12 on the night.

“It was a game-changer,” Gerlach said.

“TJ Russell is just phenomenal,” Gerlach added. “That guy is Spider Man in the goal.”

South Whidbey (5-0-5 in Cascade Conference; 7-0-5 overall) responded with a push that resulted in Myatt’s second goal on an assist by freshman Tyler Russell in the 50th minute.

Lakewood (3-0-7; 4-0-8 overall) scored in the 60th minute to bring the score to 2-1. Myatt sealed South Whidbey’s victory with his third goal in the 70th minute on an assist from senior midfielder Michael Grimm.

“We showed we can play with anybody in the conference,” Myatt said.

South Whidbey again played with a depleted bench. Four regular varsity players were out with illness and injury, and two more were injured during the game. Junior midfielder Noah Moeller, the team’s leading scorer, was sidelined with a concussion. Sophomore forward Darby Hayes was also out with a concussion, and he’s out for the rest of the regular season, Gerlach said. Junior defender Rudi Hamsa was out with an illness. Senior midfielder Rain Ellis was out of state visiting colleges.

Freshman forward James Young was also sidelined in the first half with a tailbone injury. Grimm was the final injury, but he returned late in the game. Gerlach expected both Young and Grimm to play on Friday against Coupeville. He also said he was hopeful Moeller would play on Friday.

South Whidbey senior forward Miles Goodman is out for the season with a dislocated shoulder that happened last week against Granite Falls.

“I had a really small crew,” Gerlach said. “I only had two, well three counting the backup goalkeeper, on the bench.”

The Falcons’ coach had a lofty goal to find a reserve to fill his bench.

“I’ll talk to the Sounders [FC] and see if I can get that Freddie Montero guy,” Gerlach said.

South Whidbey found stability in the return of two starting senior defenders. Dean Freundlich and Thomas White both returned after missing three games with the flu. Freundlich returned without reservation from an ankle sprain in addition to the flu and played the entire game, including minutes at forward.

The win put the four-game losing streak further behind the Falcons. One of the problems during that stretch was passing and ball control, which Gerlach said were highlights against Lakewood. He credited his team’s work ethic for improving its control and passing.

“They really are starting to connect better,” Gerlach said. “They’re sharing the ball up the field.”

Now on a three-game winning streak, South Whidbey hosted Island rival Coupeville (3-0-7; 4-1-7) on Friday.

“We are feeling so much more confident about ourselves and our ability,” Myatt said of the winning streak.

The Wolves defeated the Falcons 3-0, and Gerlach said the team is ready for the rematch as part of South Whidbey’s senior recognition night.
