For the South Whidbey High School baseball team, it was too much Hunter Smith.
Smith, a senior right-hander and two-time all-Olympic League pitcher, fired a one-hitter at the Falcons in Coupeville’s 10-0 win Saturday, March 17, in Langley.
South Whidbey’s lone hit was an infield single by Alex Black in the sixth inning.
The Falcons had only two other base runners in the game; both reached on errors.
Smith struck out 10, walked none and did not reach a three-ball count on any hitter. Overall, he did not throw a ball to 13 of the 24 South Whidbey batters in the game.
While the Falcon offense struggled with Smith, their defense committed four errors and allowed four unearned run.
Those unearned runs were among the first five scored by the Wolves. Two came in the first inning, another in the third and the last in the fourth inning as Coupeville went up 6-0.
South Whidbey coach Tom Fallon said the early sloppy defense set the tone, adding that had his club played cleaner defense “who knows how the game would have played out.”
The Falcons (1-1) face King’s (1-3) at home at 4 p.m. Monday, March 19.
