LYNDEN — In the end, the Lions were kings of the gridiron Friday night.
The team from Lynden demonstrated aerial mastery in their 41-0 rout of the South Whidbey Falcons — Lion quarterback Tate Dallas threw 24 passes and connected on 18 for 124 yards.
When the Roman poet Juvenal said, “No one so rejoices in revenge as a woman,” he could have been thinking of the South Whidbey girls cross country team.
On Saturday, the Lady Falcons edged Archbishop Murphy by 1 minute and three seconds at District 1 championships, good for fourth place and a trip to state finals in Pasco Nov. 3.
LANGLEY — It wasn’t a rout.
But it certainly wasn’t the high point of an otherwise terrific season for Falcon players, coaches and fans.
For the first time in Tom Kramer’s 30 years as South Whidbey’s tennis coach, a freshman will represent the school at the state finals in Yakima.
Riley Newman took second place at district finals Oct. 19, losing only to Sehome’s Will Topp 6-4, 6-4. The state finals are May 24-25.
The South Whidbey girls soccer team beat Mount Baker 3-2 in a single-elimination crossover game Thursday.
Forward Karissa Thomas scored twice, met each time by a Mountaineer goal, the second with a few minutes left.
DUVALL — To pass or not to pass.
That was the question Friday night as South Whidbey tried to extend their undefeated season at Cedarcrest High School.
In the end, interceptions and turnovers spelled the Falcon’s doom as they were shut out 19-0 before a huge crowd.
They could feel them gaining.
The Falcon girls cross country team knew the girls from King’s were right on their heels during the Cascade Conference championships at Lakewood High School Saturday.
But with a little help from freshman Emily Martin, South Whidbey defeated last year’s state champion by 42-48 for their fourth straight Cascade Conference championship.
LANGLEY — It was just about the best battle Falcons coach Tim Durbin had seen all season.
Near perfect passing. Blistering blocks. The mother of all gut checks.
Point after point, South Whidbey held off perennial powerhouse Cedarcrest to win the second game of Thursday’s Cascade Conference contest and tie the home match at a game each.
With only three days left in the Cascade Conference season, South Whidbey’s tennis players have been trying to wrap up their final games.
The weather has been the big problem.
Currently, the team is ranked fifth in the district with two or so games left to play as of press time Friday.
Sometimes, it’s never enough.
The South Whidbey football team is undefeated in the Cascade Conference at 3-0 and 5-0 overall, ranked in the top 10 in the state by the Associated Press among 2A teams and have outscored their opponents 186-36.
Victory often comes from those who seize the moment.
So it was for three Lady Falcon soccer players, none of whom played last year — Kylie DiMartini, Julia Iverson and Laurie Robinson.
The South Whidbey volleyball team headed to Meridian High School for a season-opening tournament Saturday.
They managed to get eighth place out of 12 teams present, but that wasn’t the point.
“We’re a young team that needs to keep improving and a tournament like this is the way to do it,” Falcons Coach Tim Durbin said.
Squalicum High School’s best tennis player, junior Jake Turk, ran into a buzzsaw Thursday.
His name was Riley Newman.
A Falcon freshman playing his first match at home, Newman beat Turk 6-0, 6-1 with unrelenting poise, skill and verve.
