South Whidbey’s boys golf team won its third match against Archbishop Murphy to claim the season’s head-to-head matches.
Harrison Price was South Whidbey’s top golfer on Monday.
Price, a junior, finished in second place with 64 strokes. He missed a tie for first place by one stroke, and Archbishop Murphy golfer Ryan Fenton finished as the top golfer.
Jesse Portillo had 68 strokes and finished in fourth place.
South Whidbey claimed ninth, 10th and 11th places. Connor Mock claimed ninth place with 76 strokes, Tyler Nelson had 77 strokes and Quintin Viers had 78 strokes.
The match was South Whidbey’s final home meet at Useless Bay Golf & Country Club and played through 15 holes for a par 59.
Senior co-captain Shane Thompson’s 85 strokes did not count for South Whidbey’s team score. The top five out of each team’s six scores are kept.
The Cascade Conference’s top two teams met five times this season. A battle for first place waged all season. It intensified when South Whidbey and Archbishop Murphy met three times in the past three matches. South Whidbey won the final two matches and leads Archbishop Murphy with
2,469 points to the Wildcats’ 2,660 total team points.
Archbishop Murphy had 371 strokes for second place and King’s finished with 374 strokes for third place.
The Falcon golfers have one conference meet remaining against Lakewood and King’s today. Lakewood is the host school at Cedarcrest Golf Course in Marysville.
In its previous league match on April 28, South Whidbey also scored better than Archbishop Murphy.
South Whidbey’s strength shined at Jackson Park Golf Course in Seattle.
The Falcons swept third through sixth place. Price led the Falcons with 78 strokes through 18 holes (par 71). Thompson finished in fourth place with 82 strokes. Portillo had 83 strokes and Mock finished with 84.
Patrick Parnell was South Whidbey’s fifth scorer and had 88 strokes, good for ninth place. Nelson had 91 strokes and placed 11th.
South Whidbey won the meet with 415 strokes. King’s finished second with 436 strokes and Archbishop Murphy finished third with 438.
