A South Whidbey softball team ended the summer season on a victorious note.
Whidbey Island Thunder 12U Girls Fastpitch Select scored big in the final tournament July 29-30 in Chehalis, Washington, finishing the weekend with an impressive 6-0 record.
Whidbey Island Thunder, which is made up of girls between the ages of 9 and 13, played games against teams Port Angeles Xplosion (1-0 and 10-2), Willapa Whack (11-0 and 13-0), Tenino Beavers (15-0) and 12U Misfits (3-2).
According to Coach Keasha Campbell, highlights from the first game against Port Angeles Xplosion on Saturday included 12 outs. The game was tied at zero in the bottom of the fourth inning when Sophia Jennings hit a solo, inside-the-park home run.
She and Gretta Jones were a force together in the lineup, as they each collected one hit for Whidbey Island Thunder while hitting back-to-back. Jones made the most plays at seven.
The second game against Port Angeles Xplosion, which took place on Sunday, was an easy win for Whidbey Island Thunder. The South Whidbey team racked up 12 hits on the day. Jennings, Addison Mason, Charlie Lasick, Taylor Usey and Sophie Ziegler each collected multiple hits. Jones hit a home run.
Other players on the roster include Lena Heggenes, Annika Hastings, Sophia McMenemy, Vanny Lasick and Dakota Lyons. Whidbey Island Thunder is coached by Campbell and Daryl Blanchard.
