The South Whidbey baseball team lost 11-8 to Coupeville in a see-saw battle Wednesday.

The Wolves jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning, picking up two runs from Falcon pitcher Jack Lewis.

“Lewis was superb on the day, going six strong innings and keeping the Wolves off balance for most of the day,” said Falcon coach Dave Guetlin

Lewis was relieved in the seventh and the next South Whidbey pitchers found the going tough, trying to find the strike zone and giving up four runs.

Earlier, the Falcons came back to pick up one run and make the score 2-1. “Duck” Hanna got on base via a Coupeville miscue, Robert Kirby followed with a single and TJ Fallon singled in Hanna with his first of four RBIs.

In the third, the Wolves put together two singles and a double to plate two more runs, making the score 4-1 Coupeville.

“The Falcons, as usual this season, would not go away easily as they picked up three runs in the bottom of the inning tying the game at 4-4,” Guetlin said. “Two Coupeville miscues led the way before the big blow, an Austin Bennett double to left center.”

The Falcons took the lead 5-4 with a lead-off double by Kirby, and David Woodbury brought Kirby in with a single to left field.

In the sixth, the Falcons picked up three runs to pad their lead to 8-4. Dakota Brown singled, then Hanna and Kirby walked. With two outs and a full count, Fallon drove in all three runners.

But in the top of the eighth, South Whidbey gave up three runs.
