The South Whidbey girls cross country team took second place at the Cascade Conference Championships last week, beating Lakewood for the second time this season.

Sixth-ranked 2A Cedarcrest High School edged South Whidbey 46-51 to take first place; Lakewood raced without two of its top five runners due to injuries and finished with 76 points.

Keely Craig, Chantal White and Lillianna Stelling finished fifth, sixth and seventh for the Falcons. All three are first-team all-Cascade Conference runners.

Craig, a junior, ran her personal best and led the Falcons in 20 minutes, 16 seconds.

Ben Saari led the boys with an 11th-place finish. Saari ran his career-best 5,000 meter race in 17 minutes, 19 seconds.

Cara Strodel, a senior from Cedarcrest, won the girls Cascade Conference meet in 19 minutes, 19 seconds.

Tyler King, a senior at Coupeville High School, won the boys Cascade Conference meet in 15 minutes, 58 seconds.

South Whidbey High School will race in and host the District 1 2A/3A and Districts 1 and 2 4A meet today in Langley.

The girls race first, and the 2A race begins at 11:30 a.m., followed by the 3A race at 12:10 p.m., then the 4A race at 12:50 p.m.

The boys races begin at 1:30 p.m., 2 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. in the same order as the girls races.

Forty seven schools will visit South Whidbey for the District 2A, 3A and 4A championships.

In the 2A races and the top four teams and top 20 individuals qualify for the state championships in Pasco on Nov. 6.
